Strep Throat

So last Thursday, I started getting a horrible sore throat. I took about three Advil and it seemed to take care of it for about four hours. Well Friday came and I still had the sore throat, but I decided to ignore it and overdose on Advil for the weekend. Well last night I checked my throat and there was a small white spot in the back of my throat which is what I associated strep throat with (<— poor grammar I know!). Anyway, today I went to urgent care and to my shock and disappointment, I do not have strep throat. I just have a pus patch in the back of my throat…. here is a visual:

strep

I do not have the white tonsils. I have the white nastiness in the back of my throat. Anyway, I hope this goes away soon. Stupid colds. Also, you can thank me for not taking ’actual’ photos. I thought about it, but ..well I am 33 now and much more mature (the actual photos didn’t turn out too good).

I will share this with your grandma and I know she will pray for you to get well. It will also bring back some memories of when I was growing up. Now I am waiting to see Diane’s comments.
I was and continue to be constantly reminded by her that I had this same condition over and over again growing up….Mom would “get the lamp” see the pus pockets down my throat and call the doctor. Those days the doctor would make house calls. I hated to see him because he would always give me 2 painful penicillin shots. Diane kids me even to this day about it….but it’s not at all funny for me.
It’s very painful and I do hope that you are feeling better very soon. Popicles and ice cream and lots of rest. I am sure your cute kids are playing doctor and nurse and giving you lots of attention.
    Love ya….

    Hi,
The white pus patch was due to too much of Advil. I had a tooth ache and took Advil for like 7 days and I knew too much. Now I have this white pus patch too. Hope it goes away soon.

    Hey Miles,
I think you might be absolutely right. I had that sore throat a while ago, but I do remember taking a ton of Advil. I think you are on to something.

I get these white patches occasionally too (maybe 2x a year). It isn't strep (I've had the tests)… it's a different form of bacteria. The white patches are pus patches. Pus is actually an accumulation of dead white cells (white cells fight off bacteria and viruses). If you have a TON of white in your throat, you should probably see about getting an antibiotic (like penicillin). Sometimes these bacterial infections can migrate and move toward the lungs (Jim Hinson, creator of the Muppets, died of an advanced strep throat infection that went unchecked). Most sore throats are not dangerous, and many are allergy related. But when there are white areas that means you have bacteria involved. My question is this: should I look into getting my tonsils out considering I get this "patchy white throat" thing about 2-3 times a year? People with chronic strep throat do that, right?

I have the same thing going on, I was tested for strep and it came back negaive. My sore throat and sore neck/back came on all of a sudden on sunday afternoon and then sunday night i was running a fever all night and couldn't sleep. I woke up at about 3 in the morning and saw i was beginning to develop small white patches on the back of my throat. That morning I decided to go to the doctor and found that I had a low fever (99.2) which did not break until tuesday morning. I was put on penacillin immediately on monday even though my quick strep test was negative because I knew my boyfriend was just diagnosed with strep on sunday when his cultured test came back. It is now wednesday night and my throat has been getting progressively more sore and I am noticing that it is very red now and has many small almost bubble-looking patches on it. as well. Some of the white patches have gone away, but there are new ones in different spots as before… I'm hoping it's not anything serious that my penacillin, cough drops, and chloraseptic spray won't fix… Anyone have any idea what it is if it isn't strep? Definitely some kind of infection… but what?

It's Tonsil Crypts!!!! Google it! They are 'white balls' that grow out of your tonsils…..

They are Tonsil Crypts ;) White balls that grow in & out of your tonsils when they are infected.

    Julie MonsterID Icon Julie:

They are called tonsil crypts. They grow inside & outside of your tonsils when they are infected. You can pick them off with a Q-tip. They are very common and cause sore throats. Once gone, your throat will feel great. You can also remove them with a water pick by flushing them out.

If you google it, there are many methods to remove them.
